Ebook About
National Outdoor Book Awards WinnerWinner of the BANFF Adventure Travel AwardA thrilling and harrowing story. If it’s a cliche to say I couldn’t put this book down, well, too bad: I couldn’t put this book down.” —Jess Walter, bestselling author of Beautiful Ruins“Polar exploration is utter madness. It is the insistence of life where life shouldn’t exist. And so, Labyrinth of Ice shows you exactly what happens when the unstoppable meets the unmovable. Buddy Levy outdoes himself here. The details and story are magnificent.” Brad Meltzer, bestselling author of The First Conspiracy: The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington Based on the author's exhaustive research, the incredible true story of the Greely Expedition, one of the most harrowing adventures in the annals of polar exploration. In July 1881, Lt. A.W. Greely and his crew of 24 scientists and explorers were bound for the last region unmarked on global maps. Their goal: Farthest North. What would follow was one of the most extraordinary and terrible voyages ever made. Greely and his men confronted every possible challenge—vicious wolves, sub-zero temperatures, and months of total darkness—as they set about exploring one of the most remote, unrelenting environments on the planet. In May 1882, they broke the 300-year-old record, and returned to camp to eagerly await the resupply ship scheduled to return at the end of the year. Only nothing came. 250 miles south, a wall of ice prevented any rescue from reaching them. Provisions thinned and a second winter descended. Back home, Greely’s wife worked tirelessly against government resistance to rally a rescue mission.Months passed, and Greely made a drastic choice: he and his men loaded the remaining provisions and tools onto their five small boats, and pushed off into the treacherous waters. After just two weeks, dangerous floes surrounded them. Now new dangers awaited: insanity, threats of mutiny, and cannibalism. As food dwindled and the men weakened, Greely's expedition clung desperately to life.Labyrinth of Ice tells the true story of the heroic lives and deaths of these voyagers hell-bent on fame and fortune—at any cost—and how their journey changed the world.

Book Labyrinth of Ice: The Triumphant and Tragic Greely Polar Expedition Review :

Excellent book on the subject material. While I am severely limited in my exposure to historical narrative writing I feel this author could take any story and make it interesting. The style is wonderful and though I knew from the beginning how the expedition ends, I could not help but find myself rooting for the men’s success.I would recommend for anyone interested in history or adventure stories.
I knew nothing, really, about the Greely expedition, or if I did, I couldn't be sure I wasn't thinking about one of the other Arctic expeditions, like Franklin's, Scott's or Amundsen's. I'd recently read  Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage , so I was interested in an indepth look at another polar exploration story.Author Buddy Levy employs the highly effective nonfiction device of telling the story through the lives of the men on the expedition. We get to know them as individuals, so -- and you could say, unfortunately -- we come to care about them. It's heart wrenching when they begin to succumb to the cold, sickness and starvation. I particularly mourned George Rice, who came aboard as the expedition's photographer, but became one of the most valuable members of the team for his endurance and problem-solving prowess.Of course, the main character of the book is the Arctic ice. Ice, ice and more ice! I don't really have an explorer's curiosity, so I just couldn't imagine being so bent on reaching the north pole, or as the term was then, the Farthest North, that I would want to spend years battling the freezing temperatures and pitiless ice. Greely seemed to be driven not only by the explorer's heart, but also a scientist's mind. He wanted to contribute to the world's knowledge about not only an unknown place, but about the earth's attributes and climate conditions in a lightly mapped part of the world.Once Greeley and his men are hobbled by the weather, Mr. Levy's story begins to alternate between their travails and those of the three rescue missions sent out to find them. More ice! The close calls, where the ship comes within a few miles of the explorers yet doesn't know they're there, are heartbreaking. It's amazing to think of explorers in that time period, where the only means of communication was to stash letters and supplies in places up and down the coast. We have it good in this era!The journal entries and dialog that the author employs liberally really bring the story to life. The stoicism of the men, and in general, people of an earlier age, comes through, especially when understatement makes the deprivations all the more devastating. "We are all more or less unreasonable," Greeley writes in his journal, "and I only wonder that we are not insane... I wonder if we will survive the horrors of this ice prison."Looking at the photos, you realize that exploration was principally a privilege of a certain class -- all white men, and wealthy white men in charge. This expedition was notable for the fact that the crew weren't seasoned Arctic hands, yet they succeeded in reaching unmapped parts on the world -- Farthest North and Farthest West -- and adding to the world's scientific knowledge. They survived for a very long time using their wits and willpower. In the end, Nature took nineteen of their lives. If I were one of their loved ones, I wouldn't think this expedition worthwhile. But for the world at large, it was an admirable journey undertaken for the good of humankind.
